Foreign Investment in China Drops in 2012

Foreign direct investment (FDI) in China fell 3.7 percent year on year to US$ 111.72 billion in 2012, the Ministry of Commerce says. Its spokesman, Shen Danyang, said the number of enterprises investing in the country fell 10.1 percent to 24,925. In December, FDI totaled US$ 11.7 billion, down 4.5 percent from the same month a year earlier. FDI in central China was US$ 9.29 billion in 2012, up 18.5 percent from 2011. Chinese investment in other counties rose 25 percent in the first 11 months of last year.

PLA Makes Troop Designations Public

The People's Liberation Army (PLA) has enacted a policy that informs the public of troop designations. The policy went into effect on January 15 and news agencies have already taken advantage of it. CCTV recently discussed training of the 39th Group Army in the Shenyang Military Region, in the northeast. The PLA says this will help increase transparency. The PLA underwent leadership changes in October, just before the Communist Party's 18th National Congress.

Country Now Has More than 560 Mln Net Users

The number of Internet users in the country rose by 50.9 million in 2012, bringing the total number to 564 million, the China Internet Network Information Center said in a report. Some 27 percent of those now online live in rural areas. Net users spend about 20.5 hours online each week, the report said, 1.8 hours more than in 2011. By the end of the year, 420 million people used the Internet on mobile devices and 309 million were microblogging. Some 202 million people were microblogging on cell phones.

Air China to Fly Direct to Houston

Air China will fly direct to Houston, Texas, beginning in July, giving the airline better access to Central and South America. The airline will make four round-trip flights a week using Boeing 777-300ER planes. The trip from Beijing will take 13 hours and 40 minutes, and the return flight will take just under an hour longer. Air China began flying to New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco in 1981. The airline and the city of Houston hope that the new route will also benefit Sino-U.S. relations and boost the city's economy.

50 Gov't Agencies 'Misused Funds in 2011'

Fifty government agencies were found to have misused public funds totaling 10 billion yuan in 2011, a report by the National Audit Office says. The audit covered central government budget allocation, local government funds, money for major investments and post-disaster reconstruction projects, the national auditor said. Some 660 people were punished or handed to the judicial system.
