OKI MB491+LP

Contrary to what you might expect from its name, the OKI MB491+LP ($549 direct), a monochrome multifunction printer (MFP), isn't simply the OKI MB491 with a little something extra tacked on. It actually claims a faster speed, at 47 pages per minute (ppm). On the other hand, it does indeed tack on something as well, replacing the MB491's letter-size flatbed with a legal-size version. The larger flatbed makes it the preferred choice for offices that scan and copy a lot of legal-size pages.

As with the OKI MB491 and the Brother MFC-8950DW that's Editors' Choice in this category, the MB491+LP is aimed primarily at micro and small offices with relatively heavy-duty print needs. As with the MFC-8950DW, it focuses a little more heavily on the copying and scanning features than most small office MFPs.

Core features include printing and faxing from, as well as scanning to a PC, including over a network; working as a standalone copier and fax machine; and being able to scan to and print from a USB memory key. Very much worth mention is that the front-panel menus are nicely designed, making it easy to change settings and give commands.

In addition to the legal-size flatbed, the printer offers a 50-page automatic document feeder (ADF), which also can handle legal-size pages. Even better, the ADF duplexes too, by scanning one side of the page, turning it over, and scanning the other. For copying, the combination of the duplexing ADF and duplex printing lets you copy either single or double-sided originals to your choice of single or double-sided copies. And note that unlike some printers with duplexing ADFs, the MB491+LP can scan in duplex for faxing as well as for scanning and copying.

Paper handling for printing is also a strong point. In addition to the built-duplexer, the printer offers enough input capacity for most small offices, with a 250-sheet drawer and a 100-sheet multipurpose tray as standard. If you need more, you can also add a 530-sheet optional tray ($183.99 direct), for a maximum 880-sheet capacity.

One other feature worth mention is private printing, which will let you send sensitive print jobs to the printer and tell it to hold them in memory, rather than print them immediately, until you enter a PIN code at the front panel.

Setup and Speed
As is typical for the category, the MB491+LP is a little too big to comfortably share a desk with, at 17.9 by 19.1 by 16.7 inches (HWD), but small enough so you should be able to find room for it in most small offices. Setup is absolutely standard. For my tests, I connected it to a wired network and installed the PCL driver on a Windows Vista system.

OKI MB491+LP

The rated 47 ppm speed should be close to what you'll see if you print text documents with little formatting. On our business applications suite, however, I timed the printer (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 9.7 ppm. That makes the MB491+LP essentially tied with the Editors' Choice OKI MB471 at 9.5 ppm and a touch slower than, but very much in the same ballpark as, both the MB491 at 10.5 ppm and the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-8950DW at 10.6 ppm. More generally, the speed for all of these printers is best described as acceptable, but unimpressive for their engine ratings.

Output Quality
Output quality is a moderate plus for the MB491+LP, with quality scores for each type of output?text, graphics, and photos?at the high end of the range where the vast majority of monochrome MFPs fall.

Text in my tests was easily good enough for any business need short of high-quality desktop publishing. Graphics output, similarly, was also good enough for any internal business need, including PowerPoint handouts for most situations. Depending on how critical an eye you have, however, you may or may not consider the graphics quality good enough to hand out when you need to convey a sense of professionalism.

Photo quality was easily suitable for printing photos in client newsletters and more than good enough to print Web pages with recognizable photos. Also very much worth mention, given the MB491+LP's emphasis on copying features, is that it did a far better job in my copy tests with photos than most mono MFPs, retaining surprisingly good photo quality in the copies.

If you don't need a legal-size flatbed, there's little reason to consider the OKI MB491+LP, and you should be looking at printers without one, like the OKI MB471, instead. If you need the larger flatbed, on the other hand, note that the MB491+LP doesn't offer quite as much as the Brother MFC-8950DW. In particular, it lacks the Brother MFC-8950DW's Wi-Fi, its support for various mobile printing apps, and its well-designed touch-screen controls, all of which keep the Brother printer firmly in place as Editors' Choice. On the other hand, the Brother printer costs more. If you don't need its extras, the OKI MB491+LP may well be the better fit.

Genetic variation recent, varies among populations

Thursday, November 29, 2012

Nearly three-quarters of mutations in genes that code for proteins ? the workhorses of the cell ? occurred within the past 5,000 to 10,000 years, fairly recently in evolutionary terms, said a national consortium of genomic and genetic experts, including those at Baylor College of Medicine.

"One of the most interesting points is that Europeans have more new deleterious (potentially disease-causing) mutations than Africans," said Dr. Suzanne Leal, professor of molecular and human genetics at BCM and an author of the report. She is also director of the BCM Center for Statistical Genetics. "Having so many of these new variants can be partially explained by the population explosion in the European population. However, variation that occur in genes that are involved in Mendelian traits and in those that affect genes essential to the proper functioning of the cell tend to be much older." (A Mendelian trait is controlled by a single gene. Mutations in that gene can have devastating effects.)

The amount variation or mutation identified in protein-coding genes (the exome) in this study is very different from what would have been seen 5,000 years ago, said Leal and her colleagues in the report that appears online in the journal Nature. The report shows that "recent" events have a potent effect on the human genome.

Eighty-six percent of the genetic variation or mutations that are expected to be harmful arose in European-Americans in the last five thousand years, said the researchers.

The researchers used established bioinformatics techniques to calculate the age of more than a million changes in single base pairs (the A-T, C-G of the genetic code) that are part of the exome or protein-coding portion of the genomes (human genetic blueprint) of 6,515 people of both European-American and African-American decent. The research was an offshoot of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Exome Sequencing Project.

"The recent dramatic increase in human population size, resulting in a deluge of rare functionally important variation, has important implications for understanding and predicting current and future patterns of human disease and evolution," wrote the authors in their report.

Emirates cancels Damascus flights, Internet goes dark

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels battled forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad just outside Damascus on Thursday, forcing the closure of the main airport road, and the Dubai-based Emirates airline suspended flights to the Syrian capital.

Residents also reported Internet connections in the capital were down and mobile and land telephone lines working only sporadically in what appeared to be the worst disruption to communications in Syria since an uprising began 20 months ago.

The past two weeks have seen rebels overrunning army bases across Syria, exposing Assad's loss of control in northern and eastern regions despite the devastating air power that he has used to bombard opposition strongholds.

Rebels and activists said the fighting along the road to Damascus airport, southeast of the capital, was heavier in that area than at any other time in the conflict.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a opposition monitoring group, said clashes were particularly intense in Babbila, a suburb bordering the insurgent stronghold of Tadamon.

Nabeel al-Ameer, a spokesman for the rebel Military Council in Damascus, said that a large number of army reinforcements had arrived along the road after three days of scattered clashes ending with rebels seizing side streets to the north of it.

"There are no clashes directly around the airport; the fighting is about 3 or 4 kilometers away," he said via Skype, adding that rebels had taken control of many secondary roads and were expected to advance towards the airport.

He said that he hoped the proximity of the rebels to the airport would dissuade authorities from using it to import military equipment, but the priority now was to block the road.

A Syrian security source told Reuters on condition of anonymity that the army had started a "cleansing operation" in the capital to confront rebel advances.

Residents said the Internet in Damascus crashed in the early afternoon and mobile and land telephone lines were functioning only intermittently.

A blog post on Renesys, a U.S. company which tracks Internet traffic worldwide, said that at 12:26 p.m. in Damascus, Syria's international Internet connectivity shut down completely.

Emirates said it was suspending daily flights to Damascus "until further notice", but other airlines continued operations.

Airport sources in Cairo said an Egypt Air flight that left at 1:30 p.m. (1130 GMT) had landed in Damascus as scheduled.

"The Egypt Air plane has arrived ... and passengers are all safe but the pilot was instructed to take off back to Cairo without passengers if he felt that the situation there is not good to stay for longer," an official at Cairo airport said.

Elsewhere in Damascus, warplanes bombed Kafr Souseh and Daraya, two neighborhoods that fringe the center of the city where rebels have managed to hide out and ambush army units, according to opposition activists.

"NOT LAST DAYS YET"

A senior European Union official said that Assad appeared to be preparing for a military showdown around Damascus, possibly by isolating the city with a network of checkpoints.

"The rebels are gaining ground but it is still rather slow. We are not witnessing the last days yet," the official said on condition of anonymity.

"On the outskirts of Damascus, there are mortars and more attacks. The regime is thinking of protecting itself ... with checkpoints in the next few days ... (It) seems the regime is preparing for major battle on Damascus."

In the north of the country, rebel units launched an offensive to seize an army base close to the main north-south highway that would allow them to block troop movements and cut Assad's main supply route to Aleppo, Syria's biggest city.

The Observatory said that rebel units from around Idlib province massed early on Thursday morning to attack Wadi al-Deif, a base east of the rebel-held town of Maarat al-Numan.

Wadi al-Deif has been a thorn in the side of rebel units who first besieged the station in October but met fierce resistance from government forces, backed up by air strikes.

Assad is fighting an insurgency that grew out of peaceful demonstrations for democratic reform but escalated, after a military crackdown on protesters, into a civil war in which 40,000 people have been killed.

Most foreign powers have condemned Assad but stopped short of arming rebel fighters as they fear heavy weapons could make their way into the hands of radical Islamist units, who have grown increasingly prominent in the insurgency.

Rebels decry their supporters for not providing them with surface-to-air missiles that they say they need to counter the air force. But recent looting of anti-aircraft missiles from army bases has allowed them to shoot down helicopters and jets.

"So far, there is no evidence that any of the surface-to-air missiles used to date have come from outside Syria," said Peter Bouckaert, emergencies director at Human Rights Watch.

"The limited number of surface-to-air missiles that have shown up all appear to have come from Syrian military stock captured by the armed opposition."

He said the number of these missiles in rebel hands was probably over 20 but that will rise significantly as rebels are capturing military bases on an almost-daily basis.

The relatively small number of anti-aircraft missiles looted so far means that many rebel-controlled areas of the country remain vulnerable to air strikes. The Observatory said 15 citizens, including children and women, were killed during a bombing in Aleppo's Ansari district on Thursday.

Activist video footage showed the bodies of at least four children, wrapped in red blankets and apparently wearing pyjamas. Another video showed the immediate aftermath of the attack, with the bodies of children in the street and covered in cement dust. Half of one young boy's head was missing.

Ford aims for record 11 percent share of electric vehicle market

DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co , vying to challenge Toyota Motor Corp's stronghold on the U.S. hybrid market, said it expects to wind up with 11 percent of the U.S. market for hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles this year.

This target would be a record for the second-largest U.S. automaker and is more than double its current presence of 5.2 percent in the U.S. electrified vehicle market.

Toyota, the maker of the popular Prius hybrid, held 70.4 percent share during the first 10 months of the year, according to auto information site Edmunds.com. Ford's larger U.S. rival General Motors Co accounts for 12.5 percent of the market.

But Toyota's market share has slipped, down to 60.9 percent in October, Edmunds.com data show. Meanwhile, Ford has jumped to 11.8 percent share in October.

Ford has made improving fuel economy one of the central pillars of its business strategy and has been vocal about its desire to challenge Toyota's reputation for fuel economy.

"Toyota has been a strong reputable player for so long," Michael O'Brien, Ford's electrification marketing manager said on Thursday. "We're not first to market, but in many attributes we believe (Ford's) products are best to market."

The U.S. automaker has positioned its new C-Max lineup of hybrid and plug-in hybrid crossovers as a direct competitor to the Prius brand.

So far this month, Ford has sold more than 6,000 electrified vehicles, a record for the company. Some 4,400 of those sales have come from Ford's recently launched C-Max hybrid and plug-in hybrid, the company said.

The Fusion hybrid, which won the coveted Green Car of the Year award this week, is among the fastest-turning nameplates in Ford's showrooms, Ford said.

3 Tips on Self-Love & Relationship Readiness

By?J. Cameron Gantt

When it comes to?love?and?relationships, the fabulous Earth Kitt once said ?It?s all about falling in love with yourself and sharing that love with someone who appreciates you, rather than looking for love to compensate for a self-love deficit.?

These are some of the things that keep many singles on what I like to call a ?hamster wheel? of bad relationships and it all stems from not being comfortable in your own skin. We all crave companionship in some form and we all deserve to a shot at finding love but the truth is, until you can master the art of?loving yourself, you will never be able to love or accept love from anyone else.

Luckily, it?s never too late to start nurturing the relationship you have with yourself and it?s never too late to start using that energy to attract a healthy, authentic and fulfilling relationship with someone else.

Be Honest
If you can?t be honest with yourself, how can you be honest with others? Honesty is important for any genuine relationship, especially the one we have with ourselves. Sometimes, I think that we forget to separate the fantasy of what we want from the reality of what we need. As a result, we find ourselves lost, confused and sometimes desperate looking for a way out. This is the point where people usually find themselves stuck because instead of focusing on the root of the problem, they are focusing on the quick fix.

The truth can be scary, but you have to take the good with the bad and own it. If it?s a positive truth, then live by it. If it?s a negative truth, then you have the option of either working towards changing it or working towards accepting it.

This honesty will bring you clarity within yourself and will also allow you to be more honest and clear about what you need in a relationship.

Stop, Look and Listen!
Pay attention to your actions and reactions. It easy for us to get distracted with responsibilities and find ourselves stuck on autopilot. A lot of times, I find that people get caught up taking on responsibilities and emotions that really serve them no purpose. It?s wasted energy.

Everything you do should serve your purpose. If you find yourself in a place where you feel like you are just going through the motions, take a time out to stop and reevaluate things. No matter how big or small the task at hand or how major or minor the info you are receiving, ask yourself: How will my actions or reaction to this situation serve my purpose?

Eliminate The Negative Self-Talk
We all have our good days and bad days and sometimes, insecurities can get the better of us. It would be unrealistic to say that you should never have a bad day ever. It just doesn?t work that way and anyone who says that they are 100% confident all the time has a good poker face.

A lot of confidence issues stem from comparisons we make between ourselves and the lives of those we know. Those comparisons are reinforced with negative self-talk and that talk is what tricks us into thinking that we are not good enough.

When you find yourself lost in a sea of negative self-talk, just replace it with positive talk. Look at your accomplishments, big or small, and celebrate them. If something is really bothering you, transform that bad juju into productive energy and get to work on changing that situation.

When you do get into a relationship, you will be better equipped to?love?that person, flaws and all.

#1ReasonWhy Brings Game Design Discrimination To Light | Tor.com

A look at the #1ReasonWhy Twitter phenomenon and how it?s bringing game design discrimination to light

It started out with one question. Luke Crane, creator of such tabletop RPGs as Mouse Guard and The Burning Wheel, asked his Twitter audience:?

?Why are there so few lady game creators??

What followed was an explosion of responses in the gamer community that sent Twitter buzzing and caught the eye of media outlets across the internet. Spurred by the seemingly straightforward question, women game designers began sharing stories about their personal struggles in the gaming industry. Under the hashtag #1reasonwhy, women from AAA video game companies to tabletop RPGs and LARPs came together to share the number one reasons they don?t want (or feel they aren?t able) to pursue game design as a career. The stories themselves are heartbreaking and speak for themselves.

As the discussion continued, women came together to speak up about their experiences, sharing tales of harassment, sexual misconduct and marginalization. Overnight, #1reasonwhy became a rallying cry on Twitter for game designers to speak their minds, racking up over 22,000 tweets. The comments didn?t just come from women, either. Male game designers came to speak out in support of their compatriots, in an effort to bring to light gender inequality in the gaming world.

But of course, along with those voices of support came the trolls.

Articles sprang up across the internet about the Twitter phenomenon, ranging from Time.com to Forbes.com and Gamespot, just to name a few. Yet it was two articles on Kotaku, highlighting the #1reasonwhy explosion and the later supportive threads of #1reasonmentor and #1reasonto, that became a forum for a tide of nasty backlash against the #1reasonwhy conversation. Here are some classic examples:

From ?Mr.Truth333?:

Are women actually expecting respect in an industry where they are NOT THE MAJORITY CONSUMER/PRODUCER. My goodness this is hilarious. Most women back then never cared for this industry and dismissed it in every way possible. Now that they see it?s a money maker, they want their piece, but can?t handle the fact that it?s a male driven industry. So they complain about it because that?s the only thing they know how to do properly and the know it will get them what they want while devaluing the product.

I hope you like feminism and PC groups forcing their ideas on the gaming industry even more now guys, because this is where it?s headed.

From ?slixor?:

You know, I always wonder why women can?t do anything but bitch and moan. I mean, if you want video games for women and are as talented as your male developer colleagues, then just make one. Develop your own game.

Also, what is it with this massive entitlement? Video games are a male dominated culture so naturally there will be mostly games targeted at males. Is that really so hard to understand? You don?t see me walking into the feminine products aisle and demand that someone make man-pads. Again, if you want to have your own niche in the industry then carve it out, don?t expect other people to present it to you on a silver platter just because you have a vagina.

It should be mentioned that a recent statistic noted that 47% of gamers in today?s market are female. You wouldn?t know it, of course, from reading these comments. Instead you?d think that women were a recent addition to gaming, and that the gamer community was under siege by some horrid plague out to corrupt everything good and worthwhile about the industry. The trolling hasn?t stopped at harsh comments on articles, however. Many women who have commented on the #1reasonwhy post have received harsh criticism and harrassment through various media. But then, that same reaction is one of the problems several game designers mentioned when discussing their treatment in the industry, and really only serves to reinforce the very arguments that the women involved have been making. If you speak up, you risk being stigmatized for being ?loud? or ?whiny? or, heaven forbid, a feminist.

In an era where Anita Sarkesian has received rape and death threats for simply starting a Kickstarter campaign for a feminist video game critique project, and salaries in the gaming industry are horribly skewed in favor of male contributors, trolls represent only the seedy underbelly of real, widespread, institutionalized misogyny. Yet the designers who took part in this Twitter conversation summoned an activist-like courage to speak out that is both admirable and encouraging.?

As I write this article, the #1reasonwhy conversation is still going on and has spawned debate all over the internet. Whether or not this newly heightened awareness of sexism in the gaming industry will eventually produce any noticeable long-term change would be difficult to predict, but for now at least, the message certainly seems to have been heard.?

Top Romney Adviser Brags About Losing Poor, Minority Voters To Obama

Mitt Romney can take some solace in his devastating loss on Nov. 6: at least he won the voters who really count.

That's the thesis anyway of top adviser Stuart Stevens, who penned an op-ed in the Washington Post on Wednesday arguing that by winning wealthier and whiter voters, Romney secured the moral victory over Obama.

"On Nov. 6, Mitt Romney carried the majority of every economic group except those with less than $50,000 a year in household income," Stevens wrote. "That means he carried the majority of middle-class voters. While John McCain lost white voters under 30 by 10 points, Romney won those voters by seven points, a 17-point shift."

According to Stevens, "The Republican Party has problems, but as we go forward, let's remember that any party that captures the majority of the middle class must be doing something right." As a result, "Republican ideals -- Mitt Romney -- carried the day."

The implied argument that poorer votes are inferior seems to undercut the campaign's central message over the last two years: that Romney's top concern was providing jobs for the jobless. The unemployed Americans Romney highlighted in ads, speeches and photo-ops make under $50,000 a year almost by definition and campaign videos like the one below are jarring next to Stevens' latest piece.

Stevens notably never mentioned jobs and unemployment in his op-ed, instead focusing on how Romney championed "the moral case for free enterprise and conservative economics."

Unfortunately for Romney, poor and minority votes counted just the same as the allegedly superior votes Stevens favored. The result was an electoral college blowout for the president powered by strong turnout and margins among young voters, Latinos, African Americans, and women.

But Stevens had an explanation for that, too. Obama was "a charismatic African American president with a billion dollars, no primary and a media that often felt morally conflicted about being critical. How easy is that to replicate?"

This post has been updated.

4 Basics of Inbound Marketing for Startups

Inbound marketing is an effective strategy to bring in prospects for many small businesses. Manage all of your clients and deals with a free simple CRM like Base.

?

When you start a new business one of the top things on your mind will be that you need to find clients.? If you implement a good inbound marketing strategy, clients can find you.

At first, you?ll probably need to hunt for new business and have to work hard to retain the customers that you find. However, inbound marketing can result in a lot less banging on doors and cold calling from people who find you and are interested in doing business with you.

The big difference between advertising and marketing is that advertising just looks to grab someone?s attention, really.? Marketing looks to build a relationship with them. Small businesses who focus more on marketing than advertising are being more customer-centric. Customer-centricity is vital in the competitive marketplace and it equates to positive customer experience. Positive customer experience brings people back and gets them testifying to others about the quality and value you bring. Those testimonies will attract others to you.

One of the great things about the internet and inbound marketing is that you can set the stage for success. You help people find positive information about your company that helps people believe that they should logically and confidently buy from you. You?re not looking to trick people (if you do, it won?t take long before you put yourself out of business) but you?re insetad creating a platform that showcases your business and shows people who you are and what you are about.

There are a number of ways to do inbound marketing activities as a start-up. Here are some of those areas and how they can help you.

1. Create a Web Presence

Creating a web presence can help people find you. Using a combination of organic search engine optimization and paid advertising, you can shine a beacon on your website as a solution to someone?s problem.

Identify a need and present that you can serve that need.

If you try to ?be? where people are looking, through keyword optimization, your site will likely come up as an answer to someone?s Google search or inquiry. If your website is an informative resource you?ll attract traffic naturally.

2. Educate and Inform

By creating a prolific presence online that informs others who need information, you can draw people to organically want to learn more about you.? Educational articles, videos, an informative business blog, infographics, guest posts, and social media / microblogging updates can help you establish yourself as an influencer in your industry. This is a brilliant way to market because you develop relationships built on trust and value.

3. Use Testimonials to Your Advantage

Online testimonies can have serious viral potential and can bring lots of people to your small business. People who want to buy something often do a review search to learn about the reputation of product and service providers.

A good inbound marketing technique is to encourage your customers to publish reviews and testimonials of you as a product or service provider.? This could backfire, of course, if you get a negative review, but could be an excellent way to demonstrate your professionalism.? People who find your company by reading reviews are also likely to come back and post a review of their own after doing business with you.? Reading positive reviews could help people choose to call you for a quote over your competitor.

4. Create a Sales Funnel

A big part of inbound marketing is a sales funnel. People are attracted to your site online but may not buy from you the first time they arrive on your site. To increase the chances of nurturing that visitor, turn them into a lead. Do so by inserting them into a sales funnel.

There are many ways to do this, such as a newsletter opt-in, free e-course, giveaway, and so on.? The idea is to find a way to drive traffic to your site and then take time to walk them through a sales process. The good thing about this is that you can have it done through a series of automated tasks that you set up on your website or email newsletter software.

In the world of inbound marketing, it?s important to track activities and analyze results.? By doing so you?ll see what?s bringing your business the most leads and the most resulting sales. We?ve only just scratched the surface here but you?ll find a multitude of great inbound marketing resources online to help you.

Tip: Hubspot is a great resource that you should consider checking out.

Are we just friends with benefits? - Relationships, Dating, & Marriage

Again, I?m looking for updates from former letter writers for the holidays. If you wrote me a letter, please send me an update from the same email address that you used to write me the first time.

And now a letter from my home state ?

Q: Hi Meredith,

About a year ago I broke off my engagement to my boyfriend of five years. It was the hardest decision of my life thus far, and while I cared for him deeply, I am 100 percent happier now than I was with him. I have always been the girl with a boyfriend, falling quickly into relationships with guys for the wrong reasons ? mainly because they liked me and were good guys. I have approached dating this time around very differently, dating multiple men at once, and really focusing on what I need and want in a partner. I feel like I have a really healthy outlook on dating.

So why am I writing? There?s a glitch in my otherwise grounded approach to dating and that glitch?s name is ?Luke.? I met Luke about 11 months ago out at a bar. Luke was seemingly nothing like the other guys I dated and initially I was very tepid about him. I was convinced that our first date would crash and burn, but I was wrong. We continued to date ? however, at the time I was also dating someone else. We continued to casually date for a couple of months and then one night we were supposed to get together and he cancelled at the last minute. About a week later he stopped returning my texts. I got the not-so-subtle hint. I deleted Luke from my contacts and made amends with the fact that he wasn?t interested. I still had feelings for him but I also didn?t want to torture myself with the temptation of contacting him.

I didn?t see or hear from Luke for a few months until we bumped into each other. We talked and he apologized about how he ended things. From that night on, Luke has been a different guy. We started going on day dates for brunch or lunch, just talking, and maybe just a goodbye kiss. We also became much more honest about what was going on the first time we dated. I told him I had been seeing another guy. I found out that he disappeared because he was also seeing someone.

The thing is, I can?t every really tell where I stand with Luke. I really think that Luke and I are at the very least meant to be good friends. Sometimes I think that we are a classic case of friends with benefits, but we go on dates, he has cooked me dinner, he consistently responds to my texts, and although we are having sex, it is neither the reason nor end game when we hang out. Luke has said that he doesn?t need ?another girlfriend? ? that he?s really looking for a wife. He also told me that he dated his last girlfriend for a year and a half before they became exclusive. I know that Luke likes me and I know he enjoys spending time with me, but I wonder if I am just someone to pass the time with while he finds his ?wife.?

I can?t help but think that if he disappeared before for the other girl, there must have been something about me that didn?t click with what he was looking for, and I have a hard time imagining that that ?something? has changed. I have tried discussing some of these topics with Luke but I don?t get a lot of information. He reassures me that he is into me and that for him it takes time to build relationships. To be honest, I?m not sure that I want to be exclusive with Luke, but I know there is something about him and the way I feel about him that is very different from the other guys I?ve dated.

Am I on a dead end road with Luke or should I continue to see how this develops? What signs should I be looking for (or what signs am I ignoring) to tell the direction of our relationship?

Thank you!

? Is there potential?, MD

A: You?ve had a busy year, my friend. Please take a deep breath and relax a bit.

I don?t know what Luke is doing or what he wants, but it?s early in the game. You can?t rush the answers, and it might be too early for signs.

My advice is to enjoy your time with Luke and to tell him what you want as you figure him out. Isn?t that what you learned from your last relationship ? to be forthright about your needs? If you don?t want to sleep with someone who?s sleeping with other people, tell him. If this lasts another few months and you want to be able to call him your significant other, make it known. That?s all you can do.

Again, you?ve had a wild 11 months. I just hope that you?ve used some of your freedom to hang out with friends. Had you emailed me a year ago, I would have advised you to cool it with the dating and to give yourself some space to adjust to life as a single person. I?m sure you feel like you wasted five years in the wrong relationship, but you didn?t. You didn?t lose any time.

It?s too early to decode Luke, so you just have to keep dating him and paying attention. As you do that, please spend some of your energy on building a life that will remain whether Luke?s there or not. I?m happy that you have an active romantic life, but if you don?t find balance, you?re going to overwhelm yourself.

Readers? Is she being honest about what she wants from Luke? When should she ask him for more? Does she want more? What does he mean when he says he?s looking for a wife instead of a girlfriend? Help.

? Meredith

Scientists discover water ice on Mercury: Ice and organic material may have been carried to the planet by passing comets

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Mercury, the smallest and innermost planet in our solar system, revolves around the sun in a mere 88 days, making a tight orbit that keeps the planet incredibly toasty. Surface temperatures on Mercury can reach a blistering 800 degrees Fahrenheit -- hot enough to liquefy lead.

Now researchers from NASA, MIT, the University of California at Los Angeles and elsewhere have discovered evidence that the scorching planet may harbor pockets of water ice, along with organic material, in several permanently shadowed craters near Mercury's north pole.

The surprising discovery suggests to scientists that both ice and organic material, such as carbon, may have been deposited on Mercury's surface by impacts from comets or asteroids. Over time, this volatile material could then have migrated to the planet's poles.

"We thought the most exciting finding could be that this really was water ice," says Maria Zuber, the E.A. Griswold Professor of Geophysics in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, and a member of the research team. "But the identification of darker, insulating material that may indicate complex organics makes the story even more thrilling."

Zuber and her colleagues published their results this week in the journal Science.

Mounting evidence for ice

The possibility that water ice might exist on Mercury is not new: In the 1990s, radar observations detected bright regions near Mercury's poles that scientists believed could be signs of either water ice or a rough planetary surface. However, the evidence was inconclusive for either scenario.

To get a clearer picture of Mercury's polar regions, Zuber and her colleagues analyzed observations taken by NASA's MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) mission, a probe that has been orbiting the planet and mapping its topography since April 2011.

Mapping the planet's surface is a challenging task, as the craft must weather the sun's intense radiation, which can "play havoc with electronics," Zuber says. What's more, the probe moves from pole to pole in an elliptical orbit, making for an extremely tricky mapping mission, both dynamically and thermally. Despite these challenges, MESSENGER's onboard laser altimeter has amassed more than 10 laser pulses that have been used to map topography and measure the near-infrared reflectance of the surface.

Last year, researchers analyzed the probe's topographic observations and created a high-resolution map of Mercury; they then overlaid previous radar observations. They found that the bright regions detected in radar lined up with permanently shadowed craters at the planet's north pole -- regions that never see the sun, and which are potentially ideal places for ice to survive. This finding was one more piece of evidence that Mercury might harbor water ice.

Revealing shadows

In this latest analysis of MESSENGER's observations, scientists believe they have found conclusive evidence for water ice on Mercury, although the data was at first puzzling.

The team found that the probe's reflectance measurements, taken via laser altimetry, matched up well with previously mapped radar-bright regions in Mercury's high northern latitudes. Two craters in particular were bright, both in radar and at laser wavelengths, indicating the possible presence of reflective ice. However, just south of these craters, others appeared dark with laser altimetry, but bright in radar.

The observations "threw us off track for a long time," Zuber says, until another team member, David Paige of UCLA, developed a thermal model of the planet. Using MESSENGER observations of Mercury's topography, reflectance and rotational characteristics, the model simulated the sun's illumination of the planet, enabling precise determination of Mercury's temperature at and below the surface.

Results indicated that the unusually bright deposits corresponded to regions where water ice was stable at the surface; in dark regions, ice was stable within a meter of the surface. The dark insulating material is consistent with complex organics that would already be dark but may have been darkened further by the intense radiation at Mercury's surface.

In addition, MESSENGER's neutron spectrometer detected elemental hydrogen in the vicinity of Mercury's north pole. The combination of the compositional, spectral and geometric observations and the thermal models provided a strong, self-consistent explanation for the unusual radar backscatter observations.

Paul Lucey, a professor of geophysics and planetology at the University of Hawaii, points out that MESSENGER has also revealed a number of regions where surfaces were much darker than in previous radar measurements. Lucey interprets these results as possible evidence of receding ice on Mercury's surface.

"This suggests that in the past, ice was more extensive on Mercury, and retreated to its current state," says Lucey, who was not involved in the research. "Even Mercury experiences global warming."

MESSENGER will continue to orbit Mercury, and Zuber says future data may reveal information beyond the planet's surface. "There are still some really good questions to answer about the interior," Zuber says. "I'll tell you, we're not done."

Gruden: No offer to coach Vols with Browns' stake

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Jon Gruden says he hasn't received an offer to coach the Tennessee Volunteers in a deal that would include becoming part owner of the Cleveland Browns.

Memphis television station WREG reported Gruden was weighing a Tennessee offer that would give him a piece of the Browns, who are owned by Jimmy Haslam ? brother of Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam. Their father, Jim Haslam, played on Tennessee's 1951 national championship team and has donated millions of dollars to the university.

Gruden, a former NFL coach and current ESPN analyst, said Wednesday on ESPN's "Mike & Mike In The Morning" show that there is "no truth" to the report.

"I like what I'm doing," said Gruden, who was a graduate assistant with the Volunteers and whose wife Cindy is a former Tennessee cheerleader. "I'm just trying to hang on to the job I have, to be honest with you."

Browns spokesman Neal Gulkis said the report was inaccurate.

"Jimmy Haslam has no involvement in the University of Tennessee head coaching search, and the report that Jon Gruden would potentially have an ownership stake in the Browns is completely erroneous," Gulkis said.

Tennessee is seeking to replace Derek Dooley, who was fired Nov. 18 after going 15-21 in three seasons.

Volunteers athletic department spokesman Jimmy Stanton said the university would not discuss details of its coaching search.

"We won't talk about any of the dynamics of the search until it is finalized," Stanton said.

Gruden, 49, helped the Tampa Bay Buccaneers win the Super Bowl in the 2002 season. He posted a combined 100-85 record and won five division titles in 11 years as an NFL head coach with the Oakland Raiders (1998-2001) and Tampa Bay (2002-08).

Gruden began his coaching career as a graduate assistant on Johnny Majors' Tennessee staff in 1986-87, but he hasn't worked in the college ranks since a one-year stint as Pittsburgh's wide receivers coach in 1991. His other college experience includes one year as Southeast Missouri State's passing game coordinator (1988) and one season as the University of Pacific's wide receivers coach (1989).

Cyber Monday, Black Friday sales strong. Do they matter?

Cyber Monday set sales records and Black Friday spending was robust. But the long Black Friday weekend is no barometer for overall holiday shopping ? it may even be a negative.

By Schuyler Velasco,?Staff writer / November 27, 2012

Packages ready to ship move along a conveyor belt at the Amazon.com fulfillment center Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, in Phoenix. Cyber Monday was the biggest online shopping day ever, and Black Friday weekend sales were strong. But economists warn that the holiday shopping season might not follow suit, as worries about the fiscal cliff loom large.

The reports are in, and as predicted, the shopping weekend after Thanksgiving was a big one for retailers. ?

Some 247 million US shoppers visited stores or shopped online over the Black Friday weekend ? up from 226 million in 2011, according to the National Retail Federation. Total spending reached an estimated $59.1 billion. Additionally, shoppers spent about 40.7 percent of their money online, up from 38.7 percent in 2011. ?

The online spending spree continued into Cyber Monday, which analysts anticipated would be the biggest online shopping day ever. It delivered, with online spending jumping 17 percent to $1.98 billion, according to estimates from Adobe Digital Index. ComScore, which also tracks online spending figures, projected online spending would hit at least $1.5 billion; the firm will release its final numbers Wednesday.

So the holiday shopping season started off with a bang. But what does that mean? Does the strong start signal that shoppers are more willing to open their wallets and purses this year? Or have shoppers, lured by longer and earlier Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, merely spent their holiday budget earlier than normal?

The answer is crucial for retailers, since holiday sales account for between 20 and 40 percent of total profits. If recent history is any guide, the outlook is not particularly positive. Sales on Black Friday, or even the entire long weekend, is?too small of a sample size to gauge the entire holiday season.

?They provide only a small snapshot on what is really happening,? Paul Dales, senior US economist for Toronto-based Capital Economics,?writes via e-mail.

What?s more, the economic research firm has detected a slightly negative relationship in looking at holiday sales dating back to 1992. "History suggests that strong sales on Black Friday tend to be followed by weak sales over the rest of the holidays and that weak sales on Black Friday tend to be followed by strong sales later on,? Capital Economics concluded in its report released earlier this month.

Mr. Dales says that this makes sense if most households have fixed spending limits. ?Good Black Friday sales may then just mean that households have brought forward some of their holiday spending,? he says.

The same phenomenon may have occurred within the long Black Friday weekend as more stores opened earlier than ever on Thursday evening, pulling sales forward. "Data suggest sales got off to a strong start on Thanksgiving night and throughout much of Black Friday (after a morning lull) but softened on Saturday and Sunday," writes analyst?Ken Perkins, founder of Swampscott, Mass.-based Retail Metrics, in an analysis. The bottom line: "decent but not great Black Friday weekend results.?

Dales and others note that holiday spending has a few obstacles to overcome this year. Consumer confidence was so-so in November, ?owing to increased worry and awareness about the possible ?fiscal cliff? ? which, if Congress doesn?t take steps to avoid it, would automatically push up taxes and reduce government spending. ?If you know that your after-tax income will fall next year, perhaps by $2,000, you are likely to spend less now,? Dales explains.

Nevertheless, consumer confidence is being buoyed somewhat by an improving housing market, falling gas prices, and optimism about the job market, according to IHS Global Insight, an economic research firm in Lexington, Mass. ?We expect holiday retail sales to rise 3.9% above last year, not as strong as the past couple of years, but a good showing,? IHS economists Chris G. Christopher, Jr., and Stephanie Karol write in an IHS release. ?

And the online sector is projected to grab an ever-larger piece of the holiday pie, jumping 17 percent from 2011. ?The clicks are outpacing the bricks,? Christopher and Karol write.

This Holiday season I have a total of ten kids to buy for (one is still in-uterero), and that?s before I get to my own two. I love shopping for kids?no really, I do. What I don?t always love?but actually do appreciate in a weird kind of way?is how brutally honest kids can be about whether a gift truly is cool or not. They have no filter at all and don?t feel the need to pretend to love those argyle socks and brown braided belt. Why should they?psst: don?t get a kid a belt and socks from Crewcuts when they want a Transformer from Target. Anyway, I went on a search for some cool kid-picks that could pass-muster with even the most brutally honest recipient and I have to say I think there might even be one or two adult cross-overs in contention, (does that make them automatically uncool though??). *Sigh*

Nokia sues RIM for breach of contract

HELSINKI (AP) ? Nokia Corp. said Wednesday that it is suing Research In Motion, the maker of the BlackBerry, for breach of contract in Britain, the United States and Canada over cellular patents the two companies agreed on nine years ago.

The struggling Finnish cellphone maker agreed with RIM in 2003 on a license that covers patents on "standards-essential" technologies for mobile devices. RIM has since claimed the license should also have covered patents for non-essential parts and it filed arbitration proceedings with the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce in March 2011.

Earlier this month, the Arbitration Institute of Stockholm Chamber of Commerce ruled against RIM's claims.

Nokia said it filed a suit earlier this week to enforce the tribunal's ruling, which says that the Canadian company is "not entitled to manufacture or sell products compatible with the WLAN Standard without first agreeing with Nokia on the royalty to be paid."

RIM said it "will respond to Nokia's petitions in due course."

"Research In Motion has worked hard to develop its leading-edge BlackBerry technology and has built an industry-leading intellectual property portfolio of its own," said RIM spokeswoman Crystal Roberts.

Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies in New York, said Nokia's filings mean that RIM likely will end up paying royalties of $2 to $5 per phone.

Nokia is among leading patent holders in the wireless industry. Major manufacturers of phones and wireless equipment are increasingly turning to patent litigation as they jockey for an edge to expand their share of the rapidly growing smartphone market.

Last year, Nokia received a $565 million royalty payment from Apple Inc. to settle long-standing patent disputes. It also has filed claims in the United States and Germany alleging that products from HTC Corp. and Viewsonic Corp. infringe a number of its patents.

Nokia shares closed down 1 percent at ?2.53 in Helsinki on Wednesday.

UK workplace pension pot charges should be revealed - new code

LONDON (Reuters) - Pension firms and insurers are calling for the costs taken automatically by people running UK pension schemes to be divulged to employers when they set up auto-enrolment schemes between 2012 and 2017.

Pension charges have dramatically reduced in recent years, and now stand at 0.52 percent of the value of an individual scheme, says the Association of British Insurers (ABI). But the little-known fees and levies can wipe tens of thousands of pounds off the value of a worker's workplace pension.

Private pension firms have been accused of failing to disclose some of the costs they levy on customers' investment funds, leaving people unaware that their pension savings were being eroded by the charges.

Industry associations have created a joint Code of Conduct for disclosing the charges made on workplace pensions for managing a retirement plan and its investments, the firms involved said in a statement on Wednesday.

The average so-called ?annual management charge' on a workplace pension scheme is 0.77 percent, the ABI said.

Umbrella organizations The National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF), the ABI, as well as the Investment Management Association and the Society of Pension Consultants want their members and participants in the pensions market to follow the practices set out by the code.

Employers will be able to chose which pension scheme they want based on the information on charges, costs and services.

UK pensions minister Steve Webb said he hoped to see "widespread adoption" of the code.

"However, we are prepared to consider taking action more broadly on charges if insufficient progress is made," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

In January 2013, the code will be available to use for a template for explaining charges, followed by the launch of a web tool in April 2013, which is being produced by the ABI.

The government backed auto-enrolment scheme, whereby people are required to opt out rather than opt into retirement saving, could lead to up to 8 million additional workers being signed up for pensions.
