Swedish immigrant shooter gets life in prison

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? A Swedish gunman convicted of two murders and five attempted murders has been sentenced to life in prison for the spate of shootings that mainly targeted immigrants in the southern city of Malmo.

The Malmo District Court on Friday also ordered 40-year-old Peter Mangs to pay 1.2 million kronor ($180,000) in damages to survivors and their families.

The court found Mangs guilty already in July, but his sentence was delayed as the court awaited a psychiatric evaluation which ultimately found him to be sane.

Mangs was arrested in November 2010 after more than a dozen shootings that police had linked to a single gunman.

About 40 percent of Malmo's 300,000 residents are first- or second-generation immigrants.

It wasn't immediately clear whether Mangs would appeal.
