Two women and four pets ? three cats and a Bullmastiff dog ? were treated for smoke inhalation following a fire early this morning on Victor Street.
A Winnipeg fire department official said the fire broke out in a basement suite in a fourplex at 804 Victor St., at about 12:30 a.m. A man living in one of the other suites called 911 after being awakened by a smoke detector.
All of the occupants had already escaped from the burning building by the time fire crews arrived. However, the two women who lived in the basement suite were both suffering from smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital for treatment.
The pets were still inside the suite and had to be rescued by firefighters. The fire department official said all four had breathed in a lot of smoke and were in rough shape by the time the firefighters got them outside.
"They looked like absolute toast. The cats were black from the smoke."
He said the firefighters began giving all of them oxygen to clear their lungs.
"They worked on them and worked and worked," he said, and eventually they all came around.
"It was incredible."
The department official said the fire caused about $200,000 damage to the structure and about $100,000 damage to the contents of the building. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
